The WALLABY team has achieved an important milestone today after releasing the first data produced by the survey to the general public. This first public data release (PDR1) includes the source catalogue, images and spectra of about 600 galaxies detected in HI emission during phase 1 of the WALLABY pilot survey in addition to kinematic models for more than 100 spatially resolved galaxies. The galaxies were detected with the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) in three separate 60-deg² regions on the sky in the direction of the Hydra and Norma galaxy clusters and the NGC 4636 galaxy group.
The data can be obtained from the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC) and the CSIRO ASKAP Science Data Archive (CASDA), either through a web browser or via TAP/ASQL. Detailed instructions on how to access the data have been made available on the WALLABY website at
The release is accompanied by two papers describing the source finding and resulting HI source catalogue as well as the kinematic modelling of galaxies:
- WALLABY pilot survey: Public release of HI data for almost 600 galaxies from phase 1 of ASKAP pilot observations
T. Westmeier, N. Deg, K. Spekkens et al., 2022, PASA, 39, E058
DOI:10.1017/pasa.2022.50 | arXiv:2211.07094 - WALLABY Pilot Survey: Public release of HI kinematic models for more than 100 galaxies from phase 1 of ASKAP pilot observations
N. Deg, K. Spekkens, T. Westmeier et al., 2022, PASA, 39, E059
DOI:10.1017/pasa.2022.43 | arXiv:2211.07333
Both papers will be published in Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia (PASA) on 15 November 2022 and provide a detailed description of the available data products and their limitations. For more information please also see the media release at
The first WALLABY public data release marks the beginning of regular releases of survey data to the public over the coming years as survey observations progress.
